What?

Why?

Multi-trade coordinationCongested plant rooms with multiple trades create collision, dropped object, and access conflict risks.
Fire and fume riskHot works in enclosed plant rooms without ventilation cause fume accumulation and fire risk from combustibles.
Heavy lifting hazardsMoving large equipment through restricted access creates crush and rigging failure risks in tight spaces.
Do Don't
  • Coordinate all trades working in the plant room through daily briefings and sequencing plans
  • Plan equipment delivery routes and lifting operations before mobilising heavy items to site
  • Ensure mechanical ventilation is running before hot works or solvent use inside plant rooms
  • Wear hearing protection in plant rooms where noise levels exceed 85 dB(A) during operation
  • Guard or cover all floor penetrations to prevent falls and trips throughout construction
  • Use hot works permits and fire watches for all brazing, welding, and cutting activities
  • Maintain clear escape routes from the plant room to the nearest exit at all times
  • Brief all personnel on electrical isolation zones during commissioning and energisation
  • Keep the plant room clean and free from combustible waste during all construction phases
  • Use temporary lighting to ensure adequate visibility in enclosed or windowless plant rooms
  • DON'T allow multiple uncoordinated trades to work in the same plant room simultaneously
  • DON'T carry out hot works in enclosed plant rooms without ventilation and fire watch
  • DON'T store flammable materials, solvents, or gas cylinders inside operating plant rooms
  • DON'T leave floor penetrations uncovered or unguarded in the plant room during works
  • DON'T attempt to move heavy equipment without a planned lifting or rigging operation
  • DON'T work near energised switchgear during commissioning without arc-rated PPE and authority
  • DON'T block emergency exits or access routes with equipment, materials, or waste
  • DON'T use solvent-based products in unventilated plant rooms — fumes accumulate rapidly
  • DON'T enter the plant room without hearing protection if equipment is running above 85 dB(A)
  • DON'T ignore trade coordination — clashes in congested spaces lead to damage and injuries
