External Cladding Installation Safety

TBT-BLD-025

External cladding installation involves working at height on building facades, handling large and heavy panels, and coordinating with lifting operations. Wind loading, falling objects, and manual handling injuries are common risks. Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, fire safety of cladding materials is also a critical consideration. This talk covers the key safety controls for external cladding installation on UK construction projects.

Key Hazards
Falls from height during facade installation from scaffolds or MEWPs
Cladding panels caught by wind causing loss of control during lifting
Falling panels or fixings striking workers below the installation area
Manual handling injuries from heavy or awkward-shaped cladding units
Control Measures
  • Ensure safe access is provided for all working positions using scaffolding, MEWPs, or mast climbers.
  • Monitor wind speed and stop lifting cladding panels when wind exceeds safe working limits.
  • Establish exclusion zones below the installation area to prevent struck-by injuries.
  • Use mechanical handling aids such as vacuum lifters and panel trolleys for heavy cladding units.
  • Secure all panels with temporary fixings immediately after positioning to prevent displacement.
  • Verify cladding materials comply with current fire safety regulations before installation begins.
  • Store cladding panels flat on level ground with protection from wind uplift and weather damage.
  • Brief all operatives on the installation sequence, lifting plan, and emergency procedures.
  • Inspect all edge protection and access equipment daily before work commences at height.
Remember
  • Stop lifting cladding panels when wind speed exceeds the safe working limit
  • Establish exclusion zones below the installation area to protect workers underneath
  • Use mechanical handling aids for heavy or awkward panels wherever possible
  • Secure all panels with temporary fixings immediately after placement to prevent displacement
  • Verify that all cladding materials meet current fire safety regulations before installation
  • Inspect all access equipment and edge protection daily before starting work at height
