What?

Why?

Prevent collapseFalsework collapses during bridge construction have killed multiple workers in single incidents in the UK and worldwide.
Design criticalBridge temporary works carry enormous loads. Any error in design, installation, or loading can trigger sudden catastrophic failure.
Legal requirementCDM 2015 and BS 5975 require formal management of temporary works including design, checking, and inspection procedures.
Sequential riskIncorrect loading sequence or premature striking removes support before the permanent structure can safely carry the loads.
Do Don't
  • Appoint a temporary works coordinator before bridge temporary works begin.
  • Ensure all designs are independently checked before installation starts.
  • Record every temporary works scheme in the temporary works register.
  • Inspect falsework foundations for level, stability, and adequate bearing.
  • Follow the agreed loading sequence during concrete pours exactly as designed.
  • Obtain formal approval from the TWC before striking any falsework.
  • Inspect falsework during and immediately after each concrete pour.
  • Confirm the permanent structure has reached design strength before striking.
  • Brief all operatives on the pour sequence and any loading restrictions.
  • Report any sign of settlement, deflection, or distortion in falsework immediately.
  • DON'T install falsework without a checked and approved temporary works design.
  • DON'T strike falsework without formal approval from the TWC.
  • DON'T alter the loading sequence without designer and TWC agreement.
  • DON'T place falsework on ground that has not been assessed for bearing.
  • DON'T overload falsework by exceeding the concrete pour volumes in the design.
  • DON'T ignore signs of settlement, deflection, or member distortion in falsework.
  • DON'T allow unapproved modifications to any part of the temporary works.
  • DON'T assume striking is safe because the concrete looks hard enough.
  • DON'T skip the independent design check — this is a non-negotiable requirement.
  • DON'T begin work under or on falsework without confirming the permit status.
