What?

Why?

Prevent fallsUnprotected bridge edges before parapet installation expose workers to fatal falls onto roads, railways, or water below.
Protect the publicParapet installation over live infrastructure requires exclusion zones and protection from falling objects.
Structural performanceVehicle restraint parapets must be installed to specification — incorrect fixing compromises crash protection.
Do Don't
  • Install temporary edge protection before removing any existing parapet or working at bridge edges
  • Use a planned lifting operation with exclusion zones for all precast parapet unit placement
  • Wear a harness and lanyard as backup when working at unprotected bridge edges during installation
  • Drill and fix parapet connections to the exact specification required by the structural design
  • Use water suppression when drilling into concrete bridge decks to control silica dust
  • Establish exclusion zones below the bridge during all parapet installation operations
  • Coordinate road or rail closures where parapet work overhangs live traffic or tracks
  • Inspect temporary edge protection daily and after severe weather or impact events
  • Brief all workers on the fall hazards and rescue plan before starting bridge edge work
  • Verify parapet alignment, fixing torques, and continuity joints before removing temporary protection
  • DON'T work at unprotected bridge edges without temporary edge protection or fall arrest
  • DON'T lift precast parapet units without a specific lift plan and exclusion zone below
  • DON'T remove temporary edge protection until permanent parapets are fully installed and fixed
  • DON'T alter parapet fixing details from the structural design without engineer approval
  • DON'T dry drill into bridge deck concrete — use water suppression to control silica dust
  • DON'T allow debris or tools to fall from the bridge edge onto roads, tracks, or paths below
  • DON'T lean over the bridge edge to inspect or adjust fixings without fall protection
  • DON'T install vehicle restraint parapets with incorrect bolt sizes, spacings, or torque values
  • DON'T carry out parapet work over live traffic without agreed closures or protection in place
  • DON'T work at exposed bridge edges in high winds without a specific risk assessment
