What?

Why?

Clear communicationMisunderstanding safety terminology leads to confusion about duties, controls, and legal responsibilities on site.
Legal awarenessKnowing what RIDDOR, CDM, and COSHH mean helps workers understand their rights and obligations under the law.
Effective briefingsToolbox talks and safety documents use these terms daily — understanding them makes briefings more effective.
Do Don't
  • Ask your supervisor to explain any safety term or abbreviation you do not understand.
  • Learn the key abbreviations: CDM, COSHH, LOLER, PUWER, RIDDOR, HASWA, and PPE.
  • Understand the difference between a hazard and a risk before your next briefing.
  • Know what RAMS means and read the relevant ones for your task before starting.
  • Familiarise yourself with the permit to work types used on your current project.
  • Use the correct terminology when reporting hazards, near misses, and observations.
  • Attend induction refresher sessions if safety terms are unclear after initial training.
  • Help new starters and non-English speakers understand key safety terms on site.
  • Read the site safety notice board which explains key terms and emergency procedures.
  • Refer to the site safety plan glossary if one is provided by the principal contractor.
  • DON'T pretend to understand a safety term if you are unsure what it means.
  • DON'T sign a RAMS briefing sheet without genuinely understanding the content.
  • DON'T use jargon or abbreviations when briefing operatives who may not know them.
  • DON'T confuse a risk assessment with a method statement — they serve different purposes.
  • DON'T assume all workers know what PPE, COSHH, or CDM stand for automatically.
  • DON'T skip the glossary section of safety documents — it defines the terms used.
  • DON'T dismiss safety terminology as unnecessary paperwork — it defines legal duties.
  • DON'T mock anyone who asks what a safety term means — encourage learning instead.
  • DON'T use abbreviations on signs or notices without spelling them out at least once.
  • DON'T wait for a formal course — ask questions and learn safety terms on the job.
