Respiratory protective equipment is the last line of defence against inhaling hazardous dust, fumes, and vapours on construction sites. However, RPE only works if the correct type is selected for the hazard and the mask fits the wearer's face properly. An ill-fitting mask can let up to 80% of contaminants through. Repeat the face fit test whenever the mask model changes or the wearer's face shape changes significantly.
Check the RPE seal by performing a user fit check every time the mask is put on.
Use the correct filter type and change filters at the intervals specified by the manufacturer.
Store RPE in a clean, dry location away from dust, chemicals, and direct sunlight.
Do not use tight-fitting RPE if you have facial hair that crosses the mask seal line.
Record all face fit test results and keep them available for inspection.
