What?

Why?

Prevent drowningFlood defence work takes place directly beside rivers and coastal edges, creating immediate drowning risk if workers fall in.
Crush and strike riskHeavy sheet piles handled by cranes can swing, drop, or trap workers, causing fatal crush injuries.
Vibration damageDriving sheet piles near buildings, embankments, or services can cause structural cracking and service damage.
Legal compliancePUWER, LOLER, noise and vibration regulations, and CDM 2015 all apply to sheet pile flood defence construction.
Do Don't
  • Wear a personal flotation device at all times when working near water.
  • Use a lift plan and rated accessories for handling every sheet pile section.
  • Establish exclusion zones around the piling rig and pile pitching area.
  • Monitor noise levels and enforce hearing protection zones during driving.
  • Survey adjacent structures before driving and monitor for vibration damage.
  • Check underground service locations before driving any pile position.
  • Inspect interlocking clutches as each pile is driven to confirm engagement.
  • Ensure rescue equipment including throw lines and lifebuoys are positioned nearby.
  • Brief all operatives on the emergency plan for man overboard incidents.
  • Plan pile delivery and storage to avoid loads near the water edge.
  • DON'T work near the water edge without wearing a personal flotation device.
  • DON'T stand under sheet piles being lifted, swung, or guided into position.
  • DON'T enter the exclusion zone while the piling hammer is operating.
  • DON'T drive piles without confirmed underground service clearance in place.
  • DON'T ignore vibration monitoring alarms or exceed agreed trigger levels.
  • DON'T remove hearing protection within the designated noise zone.
  • DON'T store sheet piles where they could slide or roll toward the water.
  • DON'T continue driving if a pile refuses or deviates from alignment.
  • DON'T work from unstable river banks without assessing edge stability first.
  • DON'T begin piling without checking the tide or water level forecast.
