What?

Why?

Uncontrolled collapseChimney and tower structures can collapse in unexpected directions if the demolition sequence is incorrect.
Asbestos exposureChimney linings frequently contain asbestos insulation that must be removed by licensed contractors first.
Public safetyThe height and debris spread from chimney demolition can endanger people well beyond the immediate site.
Do Don't
  • Engage a specialist demolition engineer to design the method and sequence
  • Complete a structural assessment and asbestos survey before any demolition work
  • Remove all asbestos-containing materials by licensed contractors before demolition starts
  • Establish exclusion zones based on the structure height plus a debris safety margin
  • Monitor wind speed and direction continuously during the demolition operation
  • Use the approved method statement — do not deviate without engineer authority
  • Provide specialist access platforms for top-down demolition where required
  • Coordinate with highways, rail, and utilities for exclusion zones affecting infrastructure
  • Brief the team daily on the planned sequence, wind limits, and emergency procedures
  • Maintain dust and noise suppression throughout the demolition operation
  • DON'T start chimney demolition without a specialist-approved method statement
  • DON'T demolish before confirming all asbestos has been removed and clearance certified
  • DON'T allow anyone inside the exclusion zone during the demolition operation
  • DON'T proceed with felling or dropping sections in high or gusty wind conditions
  • DON'T weaken the structure out of sequence — follow the engineer's instructions exactly
  • DON'T rely on visual inspection alone for structural condition — commission expert assessment
  • DON'T allow adjacent buildings or infrastructure to be occupied within the exclusion zone
  • DON'T attempt chimney demolition with unqualified personnel or standard demolition techniques
  • DON'T ignore movement, cracking, or unexpected behaviour in the structure during work
  • DON'T reduce the exclusion zone radius without written engineer approval
