Dust and Noise Control in Demolition

TBT-DEM-024

Demolition produces the highest levels of dust and noise of any construction activity. Without effective controls, workers face serious health risks from silica dust and noise-induced hearing loss, while neighbours suffer from nuisance that can halt the project. Managing dust and noise during demolition requires planning, monitoring, and active control throughout the operation.

Key Hazards
Silicosis and lung disease from inhaling respirable demolition dust
Noise-induced hearing loss from prolonged exposure to demolition plant
Enforcement action and project delays from community noise complaints
Asbestos fibre release from unidentified materials disturbed during demolition
Control Measures
  • Complete the refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey and remove all ACMs before work starts.
  • Use continuous water suppression on all demolition faces using mist cannons or hose sprays.
  • Fit silencers to all demolition plant and use the quietest methods practicable for each task.
  • Monitor noise and dust levels at the site boundary using calibrated instruments.
  • Issue RPE with a minimum assigned protection factor of 20 for all workers in the demolition zone.
  • Provide hearing protection suitable for the noise levels generated by the specific demolition method.
  • Schedule the noisiest activities during the hours agreed with the local authority.
  • Erect acoustic hoarding and solid dust screens around the demolition perimeter.
  • Brief operatives on the permitted working hours and dust and noise control plan requirements.
Remember
  • All asbestos must be surveyed and removed before any demolition work begins
  • Apply continuous water suppression to every active demolition face throughout the operation
  • Wear RPE and hearing protection appropriate for the demolition method being used
  • Monitor dust and noise levels at the site boundary and respond to any exceedance
  • Work only within the hours agreed with the local authority to manage community impact
