What?

Why?

Fire from loose connectionsA loose cable termination in a distribution board generates heat that ignites surrounding materials — precision termination prevents fire.
Mislabelled circuitsA mislabelled circuit breaker causes an electrician to isolate the wrong circuit — they work on a live circuit believing it is dead.
Arc flashDistribution boards contain concentrated electrical energy — a fault during work produces arc flash temperatures exceeding 19,000°C.
Do Don't
  • Install distribution boards in compliance with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations.
  • Confirm the incoming supply is isolated and proved dead before starting work.
  • Terminate all cables carefully — tighten connections and check for secure contact.
  • Label every circuit accurately with its destination and function.
  • Maintain adequate cable entry space and bending radii during installation.
  • Wear arc flash rated PPE when working on or near energised distribution equipment.
  • Test polarity, insulation resistance, and earth continuity on the completed installation.
  • Select an enclosure IP rating appropriate for the installation environment.
  • Complete all installation and testing documentation for certification and handover.
  • Hand over the board with a complete circuit schedule accessible to future users.
  • DON'T install distribution boards without BS 7671 compliance and qualified electricians.
  • DON'T open or work inside a live distribution board without confirmed isolation.
  • DON'T leave any cable termination loose — tighten and verify every connection.
  • DON'T mislabel circuits — incorrect identification causes dangerous isolation errors.
  • DON'T force cables into tight spaces that damage insulation and create fault paths.
  • DON'T approach energised boards without arc flash rated PPE appropriate to the risk.
  • DON'T commission without testing polarity, insulation, and earth on every circuit.
  • DON'T use indoor-rated enclosures in wet or dusty environments without adequate IP rating.
  • DON'T hand over without complete documentation of installation and test results.
  • DON'T leave the circuit schedule blank — every circuit must be clearly identified.
