What?

Why?

Life safetyA faulty VA system may fail to warn building occupants during a fire, leading to delayed evacuation and deaths.
Working at heightSpeaker installation in ceiling voids and high-level positions creates sustained work-at-height exposure.
Fire-resistant standardsNon-compliant cabling will burn through in a fire, silencing the VA system when it is needed most.
Do Don't
  • Use fire-resistant cable (FP200 or equivalent) for all VA system wiring
  • Follow BS 5839-8 for design, installation, and commissioning of voice alarm systems
  • Test speech intelligibility in every zone to confirm adequate sound pressure levels
  • Verify automatic activation from the fire alarm panel during commissioning
  • Use safe working platforms for speaker installation at height in voids and corridors
  • Ensure battery backup provides the required standby and alarm operation duration
  • Label all VA cabling and circuits clearly for future identification and maintenance
  • Coordinate with the fire alarm installer for correct integration and zone mapping
  • Record all commissioning test results for the building handover documentation
  • Brief the installation team on the life safety importance of correct VA installation
  • DON'T use non-fire-rated cables for any part of the voice alarm system
  • DON'T commission the VA system without testing integration with the fire alarm panel
  • DON'T accept speech intelligibility results below the BS 5839-8 minimum threshold
  • DON'T install speakers at height using ladders where a platform is more appropriate
  • DON'T leave circuits unsupervised for faults — failure detection is a life safety requirement
  • DON'T connect the VA system to the fire panel without verifying correct zone mapping
  • DON'T skip battery backup testing — mains power failure must not silence the system
  • DON'T stand on ceiling grids or cable trays to access speaker positions
  • DON'T leave VA installation incomplete at handover — every speaker must be operational
  • DON'T treat VA installation as standard audio — it is a life safety system requiring precision
