What?

Why?

DC electrical dangerSolar panels generate live DC electricity whenever light falls on them — they cannot be fully isolated during daylight hours.
Extreme heightsWind turbine construction involves working at heights exceeding 100 metres in exposed conditions — specialist training and rescue plans are essential.
Battery fire riskLithium-ion battery thermal runaway produces toxic gases and fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish using conventional methods.
Do Don't
  • Attend the technology-specific induction before working on any renewable energy site.
  • Follow DC isolation procedures for solar PV systems — panels remain live in daylight.
  • Use wind turbine rescue procedures and carry a self-rescue device when working at height.
  • Maintain safe distances from battery storage systems and know the thermal runaway procedure.
  • Wear arc-flash rated PPE during inverter and transformer commissioning activities.
  • Follow trench support requirements for cable route excavations on solar and wind farms.
  • Monitor weather conditions — stop wind turbine work when wind speeds exceed safe limits.
  • Coordinate electrical and civil works to prevent conflicts during EV charger installation.
  • Ensure fire suppression systems are in place before battery systems are energised.
  • Report any unusual heat, smell, or swelling from battery storage units immediately.
  • DON'T assume solar panels are safe to touch — they generate electricity whenever exposed to light.
  • DON'T work on wind turbines at height without specialist training and rescue equipment.
  • DON'T approach overheating battery units — evacuate and follow the thermal runaway emergency plan.
  • DON'T carry out DC electrical work using AC isolation procedures — they are different.
  • DON'T commission inverters or transformers without arc-flash rated PPE and safe procedures.
  • DON'T leave cable trenches unsupported on renewable energy sites — collapse risk is the same.
  • DON'T continue wind turbine work in high winds — follow the stop-work wind speed triggers.
  • DON'T ignore coordination requirements between electrical and civils trades on EV projects.
  • DON'T energise battery systems before fire suppression and monitoring systems are operational.
  • DON'T dismiss warning signs from battery units — thermal runaway escalates rapidly.
