What?

Why?

Electrical hazardRapid chargers operate at high voltages and currents — installation and commissioning require specific electrical competence and safe isolation.
Public interactionEV chargers are installed in public car parks — construction must protect pedestrians and drivers from excavations and live work.
Buried servicesCar parks contain buried drainage, lighting, and data cables — excavating without scanning causes service strikes and disruption.
Do Don't
  • Scan for buried services before excavating any cable trenches across the site.
  • Install barriers and signs to protect the public from the construction work zone.
  • Ensure only qualified, authorised electricians make electrical connections and terminations.
  • Follow safe isolation procedures for all electrical work on the charging installation.
  • Manage vehicle movements in operational car parks with banksmen and traffic control.
  • Support all cable trench excavations according to the ground conditions and depth.
  • Commission chargers using the correct procedures for the DC and AC systems involved.
  • Follow HV safety rules for any grid connection upgrade work on the distribution network.
  • Brief the team on public protection measures and the site traffic management plan.
  • Coordinate electrical and civil works to prevent conflicts and rework on site.
  • DON'T excavate cable trenches without scanning for existing buried services first.
  • DON'T leave the work zone unfenced or unsigned where the public can access it.
  • DON'T carry out electrical connections unless you are a qualified, authorised electrician.
  • DON'T work on charger electrical systems without completing safe isolation procedures.
  • DON'T allow uncontrolled vehicle movements around the construction area in car parks.
  • DON'T leave cable trenches unsupported or unguarded in public access areas.
  • DON'T energise chargers without following the full commissioning procedure and checks.
  • DON'T work on HV grid equipment without HV authorisation and arc flash protection.
  • DON'T let members of the public interact with partially installed charging equipment.
  • DON'T proceed without coordinating civil and electrical work sequences to avoid clashes.
