Exclusion Zone Setup During Lifting

TBT-LFT-023

Exclusion zones are a fundamental safety control during lifting operations. They prevent unauthorised persons from entering areas where a suspended load could fall, swing, or strike someone. Every lifting operation must have clearly defined exclusion zones established before the lift begins. This talk covers how to set up, maintain, and enforce exclusion zones on site.

Key Hazards
Crushing injuries from dropped or swinging suspended loads
Pedestrians walking beneath active lifting operations unaware
Load striking workers due to inadequate exclusion zone size
Failure to maintain exclusion zones during extended lifting activities
Control Measures
  • Establish exclusion zones before lifting begins based on the lift plan requirements.
  • Use physical barriers such as Heras fencing, cones, and tape to define the exclusion zone boundary.
  • Position a banksman or designated marshal at each access point to the exclusion zone.
  • Ensure the exclusion zone extends beyond the full radius of the load's potential fall or swing path.
  • Brief all site personnel on the location and duration of exclusion zones at the start of each shift.
  • Display clear signage reading 'Lifting in Progress — Keep Clear' at all approach routes.
  • Maintain the exclusion zone throughout the entire lifting operation including rigging and de-rigging.
  • Adjust exclusion zone boundaries if wind conditions or load path changes occur during the lift.
  • Record exclusion zone arrangements in the lift plan and brief all involved personnel.
Remember
  • Exclusion zones must be established before any lifting operation begins on site
  • Physical barriers and signage are required to clearly mark the restricted area
  • A banksman or marshal must control access at every entry point to the zone
  • The zone must cover the full swing radius and potential drop area of the load
  • Exclusion zones stay active throughout the entire lift including rigging activities
  • Wind changes may require the exclusion zone to be extended during the operation
