What?

Why?

Electrical safetyExternal lighting works in wet outdoor conditions with metallic fittings — earthing faults cause fatal electric shock.
Lifting hazardsLighting columns weighing hundreds of kilograms require careful lifting to prevent crushing and dropping incidents.
Buried servicesCable ducting routes cross existing service corridors requiring detection and safe digging practices.
Do Don't
  • Locate buried services before excavating cable duct routes across the site
  • Use a crane or HIAB to erect lighting columns — never attempt manual erection
  • Confirm column foundations have achieved the specified concrete strength before erection
  • Isolate and prove dead at the point of work before making electrical connections
  • Comply with BS 7671 for earthing, bonding, and circuit protection of external circuits
  • Use safe working platforms or MEWPs for installing wall and column-mounted luminaires
  • Protect underground cables in ducts with marker tape and suitable backfill
  • Commission the installation with lux level testing and record results for handover
  • Brief the team on cable routes, column positions, and the lifting plan each day
  • Secure lighting columns with temporary stays until foundations are fully loaded
  • DON'T erect lighting columns by hand — use mechanical lifting equipment
  • DON'T load columns onto foundations before the concrete has reached design strength
  • DON'T make electrical connections without isolating and proving dead at the work point
  • DON'T excavate cable duct routes without locating buried services first
  • DON'T use ladders to install luminaires on columns where a MEWP is available
  • DON'T leave cable ducts open and unprotected across pedestrian or vehicle routes
  • DON'T energise circuits until commissioning and testing are complete
  • DON'T skip earthing connections on metallic lighting columns and fittings
  • DON'T allow columns to stand unsecured without temporary stays in place
  • DON'T assume the circuit is dead at the column because it was switched off remotely
