What?

Why?

Prevent drowningEven shallow ponds pose drowning risks during construction and once filled — barriers and edge protection are essential.
Electrical safetyPumps and lighting in water create electrocution risk if not installed to BS 7671 Section 702 standards.
Excavation safetyPond excavations in wet, soft ground are prone to collapse without adequate support or battering.
Do Don't
  • Assess excavation stability and use battering or support in soft or waterlogged ground
  • Ensure all electrical installations comply with BS 7671 Section 702 for water features
  • Use RCD-protected supplies and IP-rated equipment for all pumps and lighting near water
  • Install temporary edge protection around pond excavations during the construction phase
  • Use team lifts or mechanical aids for placing heavy rockwork and stone around features
  • Wear appropriate footwear with slip-resistant soles when working on liner surfaces
  • Test electrical installations fully before filling the feature with water
  • Design public water features with safety measures to prevent child drowning incidents
  • Brief all workers on the emergency procedure if someone falls into the excavation or water
  • Fence or barrier the completed feature until permanent safety measures are installed
  • DON'T leave pond excavations open and unguarded where children or the public can access
  • DON'T install electrical equipment in or near water without IP-rated protection and RCDs
  • DON'T work in pond excavations without checking ground stability and escape routes
  • DON'T manually lift heavy rockwork alone — use mechanical aids or team lifting methods
  • DON'T fill the feature with water before all electrical testing is complete and signed off
  • DON'T leave pumps running and accessible where people could contact moving parts
  • DON'T walk on liner surfaces without slip-resistant footwear — liners are extremely slippery
  • DON'T connect pumps or lighting to non-RCD-protected electrical supplies near water
  • DON'T design public features without considering drowning prevention for young children
  • DON'T assume shallow water is safe — even 30cm of water can drown a small child
