Handling Manhole Covers Frames and Gratings

TBT-MAN-033

Manhole covers, frames, and gratings are among the heaviest individual items manually handled on construction sites. Cast iron covers can weigh over 100kg and have no built-in handles, making them extremely difficult to grip and lift safely. Crush injuries to hands and feet are common. This talk covers the safe handling methods and the mechanical aids that should be used wherever possible.

Key Hazards
Hand and finger crush injuries from heavy covers slipping during manual lifting
Back injuries from attempting to lift covers that exceed safe manual handling limits
Foot crush injuries from dropped covers during positioning or removal
Open manholes left unprotected creating fall hazards after cover removal
Control Measures
  • Use a magnetic or key-operated cover lifter to raise and lower manhole covers mechanically.
  • Assess the weight of the cover before attempting removal — many exceed safe manual limits.
  • Use a team lift with clear coordination if mechanical aids are not available for lighter covers.
  • Wear rigger gloves with a strong grip and steel-toecap boots during all cover handling activities.
  • Never drag covers across surfaces as this damages the frame seating and creates uncontrolled movement.
  • Place removed covers on a stable surface away from the open manhole to prevent them falling in.
  • Guard open manholes immediately after cover removal using barriers, cones, and warning signs.
  • Replace covers carefully onto the frame seating, ensuring they sit flush and level before leaving.
  • Report any damaged, cracked, or missing covers to your supervisor for replacement.
Remember
  • Use a mechanical cover lifter wherever possible to avoid manual lifting of heavy manhole covers
  • Assess cover weight before handling — many cast iron covers exceed safe manual limits
  • Wear rigger gloves and steel-toecap boots during all manhole cover handling operations
  • Guard open manholes immediately after cover removal using barriers, cones, and warning signs
  • Never drag covers across surfaces as this damages the seating and creates uncontrolled movement
  • Replace covers carefully onto the frame, ensuring they sit flush and level before leaving
