Piling Platform Design and Requirements

TBT-PIL-017

The piling platform is the foundation on which the piling rig stands and operates. It must be designed by a competent engineer to support the rig weight, working loads, and dynamic forces generated during piling. An inadequately designed or poorly constructed platform can cause the rig to sink, tilt, or overturn during operation. The platform design is a temporary works item that must be managed through BS 5975 and inspected before the rig is permitted to work from it.

Key Hazards
Piling rig overturn from insufficient platform bearing capacity for the machine weight
Platform settlement causing the rig to tilt during operation and lose stability
Ground failure beneath the platform from water ingress or inadequate drainage
Unauthorised modifications to the platform reducing its load-bearing capacity
Control Measures
  • Ensure the piling platform is designed by a competent temporary works engineer for the specific rig.
  • Construct the platform using the specified materials, thickness, and reinforcement layers.
  • Test the platform surface with a proof roller or plate bearing test before accepting it for rig use.
  • Install drainage to prevent water accumulating on or beneath the platform surface.
  • Inspect the platform at the start of every shift and after any heavy rainfall or plant movement.
  • Maintain the platform surface and repair any ruts, soft spots, or damage before repositioning the rig.
  • Do not allow any unauthorised plant or vehicle to traverse the platform and degrade its surface.
  • Record the platform in the temporary works register with its design loading and inspection dates.
  • Obtain sign-off from the temporary works coordinator before allowing the piling rig onto the platform.
Remember
  • The piling platform must be specifically designed for the rig that will work from it.
  • An inadequate platform has caused piling rigs to overturn with fatal consequences.
  • Platform construction must follow the design exactly — substituting thinner layers is not permitted.
  • Drainage is critical because standing water weakens the platform and causes settlement.
  • The platform is a temporary works item managed under BS 5975 with formal design check and approval.
  • Inspect the platform daily and after rain because conditions can deteriorate between shifts.
