Pipe Support and Bracket Installation

Pipe supports and brackets hold pipework in position and transfer loads to the building or process structure.
Types include fixed supports, sliding supports, spring hangers, roller supports, and guide brackets.
Incorrect support spacing causes pipe sagging, joint failure, and excessive stress on connections.
Drilling into concrete and steelwork for bracket fixing generates noise, dust, and falling debris.
Overhead installation of brackets requires working at height from scaffolds, MEWPs, or access platforms.
Heavy pipe support steelwork requires lifting with rated accessories and a planned rigging method.
Supports must be installed before the pipe is loaded to prevent overstress during construction.
Expansion loops and sliding supports must allow for thermal movement without binding or jamming.
The design drawing specifies support type, spacing, and fixing requirements for each pipe run.
PUWER 1998 and the Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply to pipe support installation activities.

Structural failure	Incorrectly spaced or missing supports cause pipe collapse, leaks, and flooding that damage equipment and endanger workers.
Falls from height	Bracket installation is predominantly overhead work. Falls during fixing cause serious injuries on every type of project.
Manual handling	Heavy steel brackets and support assemblies cause back, shoulder, and hand injuries during manual handling and positioning.

Install supports before loading the pipe with its full weight and contents.
Use safe access platforms for all overhead bracket installation work.
Wear eye and hearing protection when drilling into concrete or steelwork.
Lift heavy support steelwork using rated slings and a planned method.
Check that expansion and sliding supports allow free thermal movement.
Torque fixing bolts to the specification and record the results.
Clear debris from below before drilling overhead to protect workers at ground level.
Inspect brackets and fixings after hydrostatic testing for any movement or damage.
Brief the team on the support installation sequence before starting each section.

DON'T deviate from the designed support spacing without engineering approval.
DON'T load pipe onto supports that are not fully installed and secured.
DON'T drill overhead without eye protection and a clear area below.
DON'T install fixed supports where the design requires sliding or spring types.
DON'T tighten sliding support bolts so they bind and prevent thermal movement.
DON'T lift heavy brackets manually when mechanical aids are available.
DON'T work at height without proper access platforms or fall protection.
DON'T use undersized fixings or anchors that do not match the design specification.
DON'T skip post-test inspection of supports for movement, cracking, or loose fixings.
DON'T assume standard bracket types are interchangeable; check the drawing every time.
