360 Excavator Safety

The 360-degree excavator is the most commonly used piece of heavy plant on UK construction sites.
Excavator incidents cause multiple fatalities each year, primarily from struck-by, crush, and overturn events.
Operators must hold a valid CPCS or NPORS card for the specific machine category they are operating.
The 360-degree slew creates a large danger zone around the machine where pedestrians can be struck by the body or bucket.
Blind spots on excavators are significant — a person can be completely hidden from the operator on all sides.
Machine stability depends on ground conditions, operating radius, bucket load, and slope — overreach causes overturns.
Quick hitches must be of the fully automatic locking type — semi-automatic hitches have caused fatal bucket detachments.
Pre-use checks must be completed by the operator every day, covering hydraulics, tracks, cab, controls, and safety systems.
Exclusion zones must be maintained around the operating excavator — no pedestrians within the slew radius.
Communication between the operator and ground workers must use agreed hand signals or two-way radio at all times.

Prevent struck-by deaths	Excavators have extensive blind spots and a lethal slew arc — exclusion zones and banksmen prevent fatal struck-by incidents.
Prevent overturn	Operating beyond the safe radius or on soft ground causes overturns that crush the operator and anyone nearby.

Shut down the engine and lower the bucket before leaving the cab for any reason.
Report any hydraulic leaks, unusual sounds, or control problems immediately.

DON'T skip the daily pre-use inspection — it catches faults before they cause incidents.
DON'T allow pedestrians within the slew arc of the operating excavator.
DON'T work near people without a trained banksman maintaining visual contact.
DON'T assume the quick hitch is locked — physically check the locking pins every time.
DON'T overreach or operate on slopes beyond the machine's design limits.
DON'T operate without wearing the seat belt — overturns happen without warning.
