What?

Why?

Severe lacerationsThe high-speed disc cuts through skin, muscle, and bone instantly — correct guard positioning and technique prevent contact injuries.
Silica dustDry cutting concrete generates lethal silica dust concentrations within seconds — water suppression or extraction is mandatory.
Kickback forceA binding disc throws the saw back into the operator with violent force — correct technique and body positioning prevent injury.
Do Don't
  • Select the correct disc type for the material being cut before starting.
  • Use water suppression when cutting concrete, stone, masonry, or any silica-containing material.
  • Ensure the blade guard is correctly positioned and secure before operating.
  • Confirm the dead man's handle functions correctly before each use.
  • Stand to one side of the cut line — never directly behind the disc cutter.
  • Wear goggles, hearing protection, RPE, gloves, and safety boots throughout.
  • Obtain a hot works permit when cutting metal that produces sparks.
  • Use petrol-powered cutters only in well-ventilated or outdoor areas.
  • Allow the disc to reach full speed before applying it to the material.
  • Hold valid training and competence for the specific disc cutter model.
  • DON'T use a disc that is wrong for the material — it overheats, wears, or shatters.
  • DON'T cut concrete or stone without water suppression to control silica dust.
  • DON'T operate without the guard fitted, adjusted, and secured for the cutting operation.
  • DON'T bypass or disable the dead man's handle safety switch.
  • DON'T stand directly behind the cut line — position yourself to the side.
  • DON'T operate without full PPE including goggles, hearing protection, and RPE.
  • DON'T cut metal near combustible materials without a hot works permit and clearance.
  • DON'T use petrol disc cutters in enclosed spaces — exhaust fumes cause CO poisoning.
  • DON'T force the disc into the cut — let the tool speed do the work.
  • DON'T operate a disc cutter without training on the specific model being used.
