Mini Excavator Safety

Mini excavators under 6 tonnes are the most commonly used item of plant on UK construction sites and domestic projects.
Their compact size creates a false sense of security — mini excavators cause fatalities through crush, overturn, and struck-by incidents.
All operators must hold a valid CPCS or NPORS card for the mini excavator category before operating on any site.
ROPS/FOPS cab protection is essential — operators have been crushed when unprotected mini excavators have overturned.
Working near pedestrians in confined spaces such as gardens, driveways, and trenches requires additional vigilance and exclusion.
Mini excavators can slide or overturn on slopes, soft ground, and near excavation edges due to their relatively high centre of gravity.
Attachments including breakers, augers, and grabs change the machine's weight distribution and operating characteristics.
