What?

Why?

False securityTheir small size makes people complacent — mini excavators cause the same types of fatal injuries as larger machines.
Overturn on slopesMini excavators have a relatively high centre of gravity for their size — slopes and soft ground cause sudden overturns.
Loading accidentsLoading mini excavators onto trailers causes incidents from ramp failures, overrun, and the machine tipping during the ascent.
Do Don't
  • Hold a valid CPCS or NPORS mini excavator card before operating on site.
  • Wear the seat belt at all times during operation — overturns happen without warning.
  • Complete the daily pre-use check on tracks, hydraulics, controls, and safety systems.
  • Maintain pedestrian exclusion zones around the mini excavator during operation.
  • Assess slope and ground conditions before operating on gradients or soft surfaces.
  • Ensure the machine has ROPS/FOPS cab protection before operating.
  • Adjust operating technique when using breakers, augers, or other attachments.
  • Use proper loading ramps and a banksman when loading onto trailers.
  • Keep the boom low and tracks aligned uphill when travelling on sloping ground.
  • Shut down the engine and remove the key before leaving the operator's seat.
  • DON'T operate a mini excavator without a valid CPCS or NPORS card.
  • DON'T drive without the seat belt fastened — ejection during overturn is fatal.
  • DON'T skip the pre-use check — hydraulic and track faults develop between shifts.
  • DON'T allow pedestrians near the mini excavator during active operations.
  • DON'T operate on slopes or near edges without assessing the stability risk.
  • DON'T use a mini excavator without ROPS/FOPS cab protection fitted.
  • DON'T use attachments without understanding their effect on the machine's stability.
  • DON'T load onto trailers without proper ramps and banksman guidance.
  • DON'T travel on slopes with the boom raised — keep it low for stability.
  • DON'T leave the machine running unattended with the key in the ignition.
