What?

Why?

Fatal entanglementContact with rotating augers and drill strings causes fatal entanglement injuries that occur in seconds.
Rig overturnPiling rigs overturning from inadequate platforms, soft ground, or slope have crushed operators and nearby workers.
Falling componentsKelly bars, augers, and casings weigh several tonnes. Failure of retaining systems drops them without warning.
Do Don't
  • Ensure the piling platform is designed and approved for the rig being used.
  • Establish exclusion zones around the rig and enforce them with barriers.
  • Use a banksman to guide all rig movements between pile positions.
  • Guard all rotating components and maintain guards in position during operations.
  • Check for overhead power lines and underground services before each pile position.
  • Inspect the rig daily including mast, hydraulics, winches, and safety devices.
  • Wear hearing protection within the designated noise zone around the rig.
  • Ensure the operator holds a current CPCS or NPORS card for the rig type.
  • Monitor wind speed and stop mast operations when limits are exceeded.
  • Brief all ground workers on exclusion zones and rig movement signals.
  • DON'T set up the rig on ground that has not been approved as a piling platform.
  • DON'T enter the exclusion zone while the rig is drilling or extracting.
  • DON'T reach near rotating augers, kelly bars, or drill string components.
  • DON'T move the rig without a banksman guiding the route and direction.
  • DON'T operate the rig near overhead power lines without a clearance assessment.
  • DON'T wear loose clothing that could be caught by rotating rig components.
  • DON'T allow unqualified persons to operate or control the piling rig.
  • DON'T continue operations if the rig shows signs of instability or settlement.
  • DON'T stand under the mast or suspended components during rig operations.
  • DON'T ignore hydraulic leaks, unusual noises, or warning light activations.
