What?

Why?

Rig rotationA snagged barrel causes the rig to spin violently, throwing or injuring the operator in an instant.
Service strikesDrilling through hidden electrical cables or gas pipes causes electrocution, fire, and explosion.
Silica dustDry core drilling generates extremely high concentrations of respirable crystalline silica.
Do Don't
  • Fix the drill rig securely to the surface using anchor bolts or a rated vacuum pad
  • Locate hidden services using a cover meter and CAT scanner before drilling
  • Use a continuous water supply to cool the barrel and suppress silica dust
  • Contain and collect slurry water for proper disposal — do not let it enter drains
  • Wear hearing protection throughout the core drilling operation
  • Support the far side of the hole to catch the core plug when breakthrough occurs
  • Wear eye protection and waterproof clothing during wet drilling operations
  • Ensure the operator is trained in core drill setup and emergency shutdown
  • Clean up water and slurry from the floor to prevent slip hazards for other workers
  • Inspect the diamond barrel and rig components before each drilling session
  • DON'T operate the core drill without securing the rig firmly to the surface
  • DON'T drill into walls, floors, or slabs without locating hidden services first
  • DON'T dry drill concrete — always use water supply for cooling and dust control
  • DON'T allow slurry water to run into surface water drains or watercourses
  • DON'T force the drill into reinforcement — withdraw and reassess if the barrel snags
  • DON'T stand in the rotation plane of the rig in case of barrel snag and spin
  • DON'T leave the far side of the hole unprotected where falling core plugs could injure
  • DON'T operate without hearing protection — noise levels are consistently high
  • DON'T use a worn diamond barrel — it overheats and reduces drilling control
  • DON'T leave wet slurry on floor surfaces where others could slip and fall
