Wacker Plate and Trench Rammer Safety

TBT-PLT-046

Wacker plates and trench rammers are essential compaction tools used on virtually every UK construction site. Despite their familiarity, they are a major source of hand-arm vibration exposure, noise, and foot injuries. Operators frequently exceed daily vibration limits without realising it. This talk covers the safe use of compaction equipment and the critical importance of managing vibration exposure.

Key Hazards
Hand-arm vibration syndrome from prolonged use of compaction equipment
Foot and toe crush injuries from the compaction plate landing on feet
Noise-induced hearing loss from engine and impact noise during operation
Exhaust fume inhalation when operating petrol engines in trenches
Control Measures
  • Monitor individual vibration exposure time and rotate operators before the daily action value is reached.
  • Wear steel-toed safety boots and keep feet well clear of the compaction plate during use.
  • Use anti-vibration gloves and select low-vibration equipment where available for the task.
  • Wear hearing protection rated for the specific noise output of the machine being operated.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation when operating petrol-powered equipment in excavations or trenches.
  • Complete a daily pre-use check on the machine including handle mounts, fuel system, and plate condition.
  • Use a trench rammer rather than a wacker plate in narrow confined trenches for better control.
  • Brief all operators on the vibration exposure limits and the importance of regular tool rotation.
  • Report any tingling, numbness, or whitening of fingers to the supervisor for health surveillance.
Remember
  • Rotate operators regularly to keep individual vibration exposure below the daily action value
  • Keep your feet well clear of the compaction plate at all times during operation
  • Wear hearing protection and anti-vibration gloves appropriate for the machine in use
  • Ensure adequate ventilation in trenches when using petrol-powered compaction equipment
  • Report tingling, numbness, or whitening of fingers to your supervisor immediately
