What?

Why?

Maintain protectionIncompatible PPE combinations reduce protection levels, exposing workers to the hazards PPE is meant to prevent.
Legal requirementThe PPE at Work Regulations 1992 require employers to ensure all PPE items used together remain effective.
Practical safetyWorkers who find PPE combinations uncomfortable or impractical may remove items, leaving themselves unprotected.
Do Don't
  • Select PPE as a complete system, checking that all items work together effectively
  • Ensure hard hats are compatible with ear defenders, visors, and respirators being worn
  • Verify RPE face seal with a fit test while wearing all other facial PPE simultaneously
  • Choose gloves that maintain sufficient dexterity for the tools and tasks being performed
  • Wear hi-vis clothing as the outermost visible layer, even over harnesses and waterproofs
  • Test communication between radio headsets and hearing protection before starting work
  • Consult the RPE manufacturer if combining respirators with safety glasses causes seal issues
  • Check that fall arrest harness straps do not obstruct access to gas monitors or tools
  • Trial PPE combinations before committing to a task to identify compatibility problems early
  • Report any PPE compatibility issues to your supervisor so alternatives can be sourced
  • DON'T wear RPE tight-fitting masks with facial hair that prevents a proper face seal
  • DON'T force safety glasses under a welding helmet if they break the seal or cause gaps
  • DON'T assume all hard hat and ear defender combinations are compatible without checking
  • DON'T wear hi-vis under opaque outer layers where it cannot be seen by plant operators
  • DON'T accept gloves that are too thick for the task — request suitable dexterous alternatives
  • DON'T remove one item of PPE to make another item more comfortable during work
  • DON'T use hearing protection that blocks safety warning alarms or communication signals
  • DON'T ignore discomfort from PPE combinations — it leads to workers removing protection
  • DON'T buy PPE in isolation — consider what other items it must be worn with on site
  • DON'T rely on a single fit test — retest RPE whenever other facial PPE changes
