PPE Inspection Replacement and Records

TBT-PPE-017

Personal protective equipment only works if it is in good condition and fit for purpose. Worn, damaged, or expired PPE provides a false sense of security that can lead to serious injury. Regular inspection, timely replacement, and accurate record-keeping are essential to ensure PPE continues to protect the wearer. This talk covers the inspection, replacement, and recording requirements for PPE on UK construction sites.

Key Hazards
Reduced protection from worn or damaged PPE that appears functional
Head injuries from cracked hard hats that have exceeded their service life
Respiratory illness from RPE filters used beyond their replacement date
Eye injuries from scratched or degraded safety glasses reducing visibility
Control Measures
  • Inspect all PPE before every use for visible damage, wear, contamination, and correct function.
  • Replace hard hats immediately if cracked, dented, or if they have exceeded the manufacturer's lifespan.
  • Change RPE filters at the intervals specified on the manufacturer's guidance or when breathing resistance increases.
  • Replace safety footwear when soles are worn smooth, toe caps are exposed, or waterproofing fails.
  • Record all PPE issue, inspection, and replacement dates in the site PPE register.
  • Remove damaged or expired PPE from service immediately and dispose of it so it cannot be reused.
  • Ensure replacement PPE of the same specification is available on site at all times.
  • Store PPE correctly in clean, dry conditions away from UV light, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.
  • Brief operatives on how to inspect their own PPE and when to request replacements.
Remember
  • Inspect your PPE before every single use and report any damage to your supervisor
  • Replace hard hats immediately if cracked, dented, or past the manufacturer's service life
  • Change RPE filters at the specified intervals or when breathing becomes harder
  • Damaged or expired PPE must be removed from service immediately and disposed of
  • Store PPE in clean, dry conditions away from sunlight, chemicals, and heat sources
