Electrical Work Permit

An electrical work permit controls all work on or near electrical systems where the risk of electric shock, arc flash, or short circuit exists. The permit ensures that circuits are properly isolated, proved dead, and safe before any electrical work begins. It also manages the safe return to service after the work is complete. This talk explains the electrical permit process and the responsibilities of everyone involved.

Control Measures
  • Obtain a signed electrical work permit before starting any work on or near electrical systems.
  • Confirm that the circuit is isolated, locked, tagged, and proved dead at the point of work.
  • Ensure the permit specifies all isolation points, the work to be done, and the authorised personnel.
  • Display the permit at the work location visible to all persons carrying out the electrical work.
  • Use approved voltage indicators tested immediately before and after proving dead at the work point.
  • Do not extend the scope of work beyond what is described on the permit without reissue.
  • Return the permit to the issuer and confirm all workers are clear before re-energisation begins.
  • Ensure only an authorised person switches the circuit back on after the permit is formally closed.
  • Retain completed permits in the project safety file for the required record-keeping period.
