What?

Why?

Health riskContact with contaminated soil causes skin disease, respiratory illness, and cancer — exposure must be controlled at all times.
Gas hazardMethane and carbon dioxide from contaminated ground accumulate in excavations, causing explosions and asphyxiation without warning.
Legal dutyEnvironmental Permitting Regulations and COSHH 2002 require proper management of contaminated material to protect workers and the environment.
Do Don't
  • Read the site investigation report and attend the contamination-specific induction.
  • Wear the PPE specified in the COSHH assessment for each contaminant type on site.
  • Carry a personal gas monitor during all excavation work on contaminated sites.
  • Follow decontamination procedures when leaving the contaminated work area.
  • Store contaminated soil in designated, lined areas to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Wash hands and face thoroughly before eating, drinking, or smoking on site.
  • Monitor excavations for unusual smells, discoloured soil, or liquid contamination.
  • Dispose of contaminated material through licensed waste carriers and disposal facilities.
  • Report any unexpected contamination such as buried drums, stained soil, or strong odours.
  • Ensure first aid provision includes treatment for chemical contact and ingestion.
  • DON'T start work on contaminated sites without reading the site investigation findings.
  • DON'T handle contaminated soil without the PPE specified in the COSHH assessment.
  • DON'T enter excavations on contaminated sites without a personal gas monitor.
  • DON'T leave contaminated work areas without following the decontamination procedure.
  • DON'T mix contaminated soil with clean material — keep them strictly separated.
  • DON'T eat, drink, or smoke without washing hands after working in contaminated areas.
  • DON'T ignore unusual smells, discoloured ground, or oily residue during excavation.
  • DON'T dispose of contaminated waste through normal site waste skips or routes.
  • DON'T disturb buried containers, drums, or unknown substances — stop and report.
  • DON'T assume clean-looking soil is uncontaminated — laboratory testing is the only confirmation.
