What?

Why?

Fibre releaseDisturbing soil containing asbestos releases microscopic fibres that cause mesothelioma and lung cancer with no safe exposure level.
Widespread contaminationAsbestos in soil can spread across a site through vehicle movements and wind, contaminating areas thought to be clean.
Legal dutyAsbestos waste in soil is subject to the same strict regulations as asbestos in buildings — the penalties for non-compliance are severe.
Do Don't
  • Complete the site investigation to identify asbestos type, extent, and concentration.
  • Prepare a remediation method statement covering excavation, handling, and disposal.
  • Suppress dust continuously with water sprays during all soil disturbance activities.
  • Wear FFP3 RPE and disposable coveralls when working in the contaminated area.
  • Use decontamination units at the work zone boundary after every shift.
  • Arrange air monitoring by a qualified analyst throughout the remediation works.
  • Dispose of contaminated soil through licensed carriers to permitted hazardous waste sites.
  • Mark the contaminated area boundary clearly with signs and physical barriers.
  • Damp down vehicle routes to prevent asbestos-contaminated dust spreading across the site.
  • Brief all workers on asbestos-in-soil hazards and the decontamination procedure.
  • DON'T excavate soil known to contain asbestos without a remediation method statement.
  • DON'T disturb contaminated soil without continuous water suppression to control dust.
  • DON'T work in asbestos-contaminated soil without FFP3 RPE and disposable coveralls.
  • DON'T leave the contaminated work zone without passing through decontamination.
  • DON'T continue work if air monitoring shows fibre levels above the control limit.
  • DON'T dispose of asbestos-contaminated soil in standard waste skips or facilities.
  • DON'T allow vehicles to spread contaminated soil beyond the marked work area.
  • DON'T enter the contaminated zone without the required PPE and authorisation.
  • DON'T take contaminated clothing or equipment out of the designated work area.
  • DON'T assume soil is clean because it looks clean — only analysis confirms the status.
