- Wear a personal gas monitor calibrated for methane, CO2, H2S, and oxygen at all times
- Complete a COSHH assessment covering all contaminants identified in the site investigation
- Assess ground conditions before positioning plant — use tracked machines on soft areas
- Obtain all required environmental permits before starting any remediation work
- Use intrinsically safe equipment in areas where landfill gas concentrations may be explosive
- Wear RPE, chemical gloves, and coveralls when handling waste or contaminated material
- Brief all workers on the specific landfill hazards and emergency procedures before entry
- Decontaminate fully before eating, drinking, or leaving the remediation work area
- Monitor for UXO where the site investigation identifies the risk of buried ordnance
- Maintain environmental monitoring of air, leachate, and groundwater throughout the works

- DON'T enter a landfill remediation site without a calibrated personal gas monitor
- DON'T use non-intrinsically safe electrical equipment in potential explosive gas zones
- DON'T smoke, use naked flames, or create sparks on or near the landfill site
- DON'T position heavy plant on unassessed landfill ground — it may not support the weight
- DON'T handle unknown waste materials without full PPE and COSHH assessment
- DON'T eat, drink, or smoke before decontaminating after landfill work
- DON'T ignore gas monitor alarms — evacuate and reassess the situation immediately
- DON'T excavate without considering the possibility of buried asbestos or UXO
- DON'T discharge leachate or contaminated water without environmental permit compliance
- DON'T allow untrained workers to access the landfill remediation work area
