What?

Why?

Fall hazardOpen loading bays without gates or barriers are unprotected drops of several metres — falls are frequently fatal.
OverloadingMaterials placed on loading bays can exceed the scaffold capacity, causing local or total collapse.
Struck by loadsCrane loads being swung into loading bays can strike workers standing in or near the bay.
Do Don't
  • Ensure loading bay gates are self-closing and secured when not actively in use
  • Check the maximum load capacity displayed on the scaffold before each delivery
  • Clear the loading bay of people before crane loads are swung into position
  • Use a banksman to guide loads into the loading bay from a safe position
  • Ensure the loading platform is fully boarded with no gaps at edges
  • Communicate clearly between the crane operator, banksman, and receiving team
  • Transfer materials from the bay to the working platform promptly to avoid overloading
  • Inspect loading bay gates, platforms, and fixings at each scaffold inspection
  • Brief all trades on the rules for using loading bays safely
  • Use the loading bay only for its intended purpose — not as a work platform
  • DON'T leave loading bay gates open or unsecured when the bay is not in active use
  • DON'T exceed the maximum load capacity stated on the scaffold tag
  • DON'T stand in the loading bay while a crane load is being swung into position
  • DON'T use the loading bay as a waste chute or material drop zone
  • DON'T store materials permanently on the loading bay platform
  • DON'T modify the loading bay gates or platform without scaffolder approval
  • DON'T lean out of the loading bay to guide loads — use a banksman and taglines
  • DON'T remove scaffold boards from the loading bay platform for use elsewhere
  • DON'T allow personnel to climb through loading bays as an access or egress route
  • DON'T use damaged or non-functioning loading bay gates — report them immediately
