What?

Why?

Prevent burialTrench collapse buries and suffocates drainage operatives within minutes — excavation support saves lives.
Biological hazardsContact with foul water causes life-threatening infections including leptospirosis (Weil's disease).
Manual handling riskHeavy pipes, covers, and frames cause chronic back injury without mechanical aids and correct technique.
Do Don't
  • Ensure excavation support or safe battering is in place before entering any trench
  • Wash hands and face before eating, drinking, or smoking after any contact with foul water
  • Cover all cuts and wounds with waterproof dressings before working near sewage or drains
  • Use mechanical aids for handling heavy pipes, manhole covers, and frames wherever possible
  • Locate and mark all buried services before excavating for new drainage or connections
  • Wear RPE and eye protection when cutting pipes to control dust and prevent eye injury
  • Monitor vibration exposure from breakers, cutters, and compaction equipment daily
  • Obtain a confined space permit before entering any existing manhole or chamber
  • Test completed drainage using approved methods with safe pressure limits in the test plan
  • Maintain good housekeeping in the trench and around the work area to prevent slips
  • DON'T enter unsupported trenches — even shallow excavations can collapse without warning
  • DON'T eat, drink, or smoke without washing hands after working near foul drainage
  • DON'T manually lift heavy manhole covers or pipes without mechanical aids or team lifts
  • DON'T excavate near existing services without hand digging to confirm their exact position
  • DON'T enter manholes or chambers without a confined space permit and standby person
  • DON'T ignore cuts or grazes when working near sewage — clean and dress them immediately
  • DON'T dry cut drainage pipes without water suppression or on-tool extraction for dust
  • DON'T stand in front of pipe ends during pressure testing in case of joint blow-out
  • DON'T work in flooded trenches without pumping out water and checking ground stability
  • DON'T skip your tetanus and hepatitis vaccination boosters if you work with foul drainage
