Handover and Removal of Temporary Works

TBT-TWK-022

The removal of temporary works is as dangerous as their installation because the permanent structure must be able to support itself before the temporary support is taken away. Premature removal of propping, falsework, or shoring has caused catastrophic structural collapses. The temporary works designer must confirm in writing that the permanent works have reached sufficient strength before any removal begins. The removal sequence must follow the approved method statement and be supervised by a competent person.

Key Hazards
Structural collapse from premature removal before the permanent works can self-support
Progressive failure from removing temporary works in the wrong sequence
Workers injured by falling components during the dismantling process
Incomplete handback leaving temporary works in a partially removed and dangerous state
Control Measures
  • Obtain written confirmation from the temporary works designer that removal may proceed.
  • Verify that the permanent structure has reached the minimum design strength before starting removal.
  • Follow the approved removal sequence in the method statement without deviation.
  • Appoint a competent person to supervise the entire temporary works removal operation.
  • Establish exclusion zones beneath the removal area to protect workers from falling components.
  • Update the temporary works register as each item is removed, showing the date and authorisation.
  • Inspect the permanent structure during and after temporary works removal for any signs of distress.
  • Store or dispose of removed temporary works components safely and clear the work area afterwards.
  • Complete a formal handback confirming the temporary works have been fully removed and the area is safe.
Remember
  • Removing temporary works before the permanent structure is strong enough causes collapse.
  • Written confirmation from the designer is mandatory before any temporary works removal begins.
  • The removal sequence in the method statement maintains stability at every stage of the process.
  • A competent person must supervise the removal from start to finish without leaving it to others.
  • The temporary works register must be updated immediately as each item is removed.
  • Inspect the permanent structure during removal because signs of distress indicate removal is too early.
