What?

Why?

Public healthNew water mains carry drinking water to homes — contamination during installation causes illness across entire communities.
Chlorine hazardChlorination chemicals are corrosive and toxic — incorrect handling causes chemical burns, eye damage, and respiratory harm.
Pressure testing riskHydrostatic test pressure in water mains stores energy that releases violently if a joint or fitting fails during the test.
Do Don't
  • Hold valid water industry competence qualifications before carrying out installation work.
  • Support all trenches in highways according to the method statement and ground conditions.
  • Use trained operatives with correct certification for DI or PE pipe jointing methods.
  • Follow COSHH procedures and wear specified PPE when handling chlorination chemicals.
  • Establish exclusion zones during hydrostatic pressure testing of completed pipeline sections.
  • Locate existing live water mains and maintain safe working distances during installation.
  • Follow strict hygiene procedures to prevent contamination of the new pipeline.
  • Obtain authorisation from the water company before operating any existing valves.
  • Cap and protect open pipe ends overnight to prevent contamination from entering.
  • Record all test results and chlorination data for commissioning handover documentation.
  • DON'T carry out water main work without the required industry competence qualifications.
  • DON'T work in unsupported highway trenches — traffic loading increases collapse risk.
  • DON'T joint pipes without the correct certification for the specific material and method.
  • DON'T handle chlorine without PPE — it causes severe burns to skin, eyes, and lungs.
  • DON'T stand near pipework during pressure testing — stay outside the exclusion zone.
  • DON'T damage existing live water mains — locate them before excavation begins.
  • DON'T allow soil, debris, or animals to enter open pipe ends during installation.
  • DON'T operate existing water network valves without water company authorisation.
  • DON'T leave pipe ends open and unprotected overnight or during breaks.
  • DON'T commission a new main without completed test results meeting the specification.
