Gas Main Installation and Connection Safety

TBT-UTL-020

Gas main installation and connection work carries extreme risks from gas escape, explosion, and fire. Work must be carried out by operatives holding the correct gas industry qualifications and following approved procedures. Even a small gas leak in a confined space or near an ignition source can have catastrophic consequences. This talk covers the key safety requirements for gas main installation and live connection work.

Key Hazards
Gas explosion from uncontrolled escape during live connection work
Asphyxiation from gas accumulation in excavations or enclosed spaces
Fire from ignition of escaping gas near hot works or electrical equipment
Pipe failure from incorrect jointing or inadequate pressure testing
Control Measures
  • Ensure all operatives hold valid gas industry qualifications for the specific work being carried out.
  • Follow the gas transporter's approved procedures for all live connection and disconnection work.
  • Monitor the atmosphere continuously for gas using calibrated portable gas detectors.
  • Eliminate all ignition sources within the exclusion zone around the connection work area.
  • Ensure fire extinguishers and emergency shut-off procedures are available before live work begins.
  • Pressure test all new mains and services to the required standard before commissioning.
  • Brief all operatives on the gas emergency procedure and the location of the nearest isolation valve.
  • Maintain communication with the gas transporter's control room throughout live connection activities.
  • Record all test results and jointing records for the as-built documentation.
Emergency / Rescue

If a gas escape occurs, evacuate upwind immediately and establish a cordon. Eliminate all ignition sources. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not re-enter the area until the gas transporter confirms it is safe.

Remember
  • Only operatives with valid gas industry qualifications may carry out gas main work
  • Monitor the atmosphere continuously for gas during all installation and connection activities
  • Eliminate every ignition source within the exclusion zone around live gas connection work
  • Pressure test all new mains and services before commissioning or putting into service
  • Know the gas emergency procedure and the location of the nearest isolation valve
