Wastewater treatment works contain raw sewage carrying harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Construction workers on these sites face infection risks from direct contact with sewage, contaminated surfaces, and airborne aerosols. Leptospirosis, hepatitis, and gastric infections are all real hazards. This talk covers the precautions every operative must follow to avoid infection when working at treatment works.

Control Measures
Ensure all cuts, grazes, and wounds are cleaned and covered with waterproof dressings before starting work.
Wear full-length waterproof gloves and overalls when there is any risk of sewage contact.
Wash hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before eating, drinking, or smoking.
Never eat, drink, or smoke in any area where sewage contamination may be present.
Use RPE with P3 particulate filters when working near aeration tanks or sewage aerosol sources.
Ensure hepatitis A vaccination is offered and up to date for all workers on wastewater sites.
Store clean clothing and PPE separately from contaminated workwear at all times.
Shower and change clothing before leaving the site at the end of each shift.
Report any symptoms of illness such as fever, vomiting, or jaundice to your supervisor immediately.
