What?
- Plasterboard, plywood, MDF, and other sheet materials are heavy, large, and awkward to carry, creating significant manual handling risk.
- A standard 2400x1200mm plasterboard sheet at 12.5mm thickness weighs approximately 22kg and is difficult to grip.
- Fire-rated and moisture-resistant boards are heavier, weighing up to 35kg per sheet for some specialist products.
- Carrying sheets through doorways, corridors, and up staircases creates pinch points, collision hazards, and restricted vision.
- Wind catches large sheets carried outdoors, pulling the handler off balance and creating a risk of falling or dropping the load.
- Board lifters, trolleys, and panel carriers are mechanical aids that dramatically reduce the manual handling strain.
- Cutting MDF and plasterboard generates fine dust requiring RPE and extraction — MDF dust contains formaldehyde resin.
- Sheet materials must be stored flat on bearers to prevent warping, and stacked no more than the stable height for the product.
- Team lifting of sheets requires coordination — one person must lead and communicate throughout the lift and carry.
- Repetitive sheet handling during large-scale boarding operations causes cumulative back and shoulder injuries over time.
Why?
| Awkward and heavy | The combination of weight and size makes sheet materials among the most injury-causing loads in construction. |
| MDF dust hazard | MDF cutting releases fine dust containing formaldehyde — without extraction and RPE, this causes respiratory irritation and cancer risk. |
| Cumulative damage | Boarding an entire building involves thousands of sheets — without mechanical aids and rotation, cumulative strain causes permanent injury. |
