Vacuum lifters are mechanical aids that use suction to grip and lift kerb stones, paving slabs, and heavy block units, eliminating the need for manual lifting. They dramatically reduce the risk of back injuries on paving and kerb-laying operations. However, they must be used correctly to prevent the load detaching and causing crush injuries. This talk covers the safe operation of vacuum lifters on site.

Load detaching from the vacuum pad and dropping onto feet or hands
Vacuum seal failure on wet, dusty, or textured surfaces reducing grip
Back strain from operating the lifter at incorrect heights or on slopes
Pinch and crush injuries during placement of kerbs and slabs from the lifter
Control Measures
Inspect the vacuum lifter before each use including pads, hoses, pump, and battery or power supply.
Check that the lifting surface is clean, dry, and smooth enough for the vacuum pad to seal properly.
Test the vacuum seal by lifting the unit a few centimetres and pausing before carrying it further.
Keep feet clear of the drop zone beneath the load at all times during lifting and placement.
Use the vacuum lifter on firm, level ground to maintain your balance and control during operation.
Replace worn or damaged vacuum pads immediately — a deteriorated pad cannot maintain a reliable seal.
Follow the manufacturer's maximum weight rating and never exceed it regardless of the unit size.
Ensure the operator is trained in the specific vacuum lifter model being used on the project.
Store the lifter safely after use with vacuum pads clean and protected from damage.
