What?
- Drones are increasingly used on construction sites for topographic surveys, progress monitoring, and inspection of structures.
- UK drone operations are regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority under the Air Navigation Order and specific CAA authorisations.
- Drone pilots must hold the appropriate CAA certification for the category of operation being carried out.
- A pre-flight risk assessment must identify hazards including people, structures, airspace restrictions, and weather conditions.
- Drones must not be flown over or near people who are not involved in the operation without specific authorisation.
- Lithium polymer batteries in drones can catch fire if damaged, overcharged, or stored incorrectly — fire risk must be managed.
- Weather conditions including wind speed, rain, and visibility affect drone stability and must be checked before every flight.
- Airspace restrictions near airports, prisons, and military installations may prohibit or limit drone operations.
- A spotter or observer should maintain visual contact with the drone at all times during the flight operation.
- Data protection laws apply to drone imagery — capturing images of people or neighbouring properties requires consideration.
Why?
| CAA regulation | Flying a drone without the correct CAA certification is a criminal offence carrying significant fines. |
| Collision risk | A drone striking a person or falling from the sky after a failure causes serious head and impact injuries. |
| Battery fire | Damaged LiPo batteries undergo thermal runaway producing intense fire and toxic fumes — correct storage and handling prevent this. |
