What?

  • The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 are the main health and safety regulations for construction.
  • CDM 2015 places duties on clients, designers, principal designers, principal contractors, contractors, and workers.
  • Workers have a duty to cooperate with their employer, follow site rules, and report hazards or unsafe conditions.
  • The Construction Phase Plan sets out the health and safety arrangements for the project and must be in place before work starts.
  • Pre-construction information about site hazards must be provided to contractors before they begin work.
  • A principal designer must be appointed on all projects with more than one contractor to coordinate health and safety in design.
  • A principal contractor must be appointed to manage health and safety during the construction phase on multi-contractor sites.
  • The Health and Safety File is a record of information for future maintenance and must be updated throughout the project.
  • F10 notification to the HSE is required for projects lasting more than 30 working days with more than 20 workers.
  • Everyone on site has duties under CDM — it is not just a management responsibility but applies to every worker.

Your legal dutiesCDM 2015 places specific duties on workers including cooperation, following instructions, and reporting dangers — ignorance is no defence.
Safer by designCDM requires designers to eliminate hazards at the design stage, reducing risk before construction even begins.
Coordinated safetyAppointing principal designers and principal contractors ensures safety is coordinated across all trades and phases of work.
