What?
- Construction health and safety uses many terms, abbreviations, and acronyms that all workers should understand.
- A hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm; risk is the chance that harm will actually occur.
- RAMS stands for Risk Assessment and Method Statement — the documents that define how work is done safely.
- CDM stands for Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 — the main UK construction safety law.
- A near miss is an event that could have caused injury or damage but did not — it must still be reported.
- RIDDOR is the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations covering serious incidents.
- COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health — the law covering chemicals and harmful substances.
- PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment — the last line of defence after all other controls are in place.
- LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations — covering all cranes and lifting accessories.
- A permit to work is a formal document authorising specific high-risk activities under controlled conditions.
Why?
| Clear communication | Misunderstanding safety terminology leads to confusion about duties, controls, and legal responsibilities on site. |
| Legal awareness | Knowing what RIDDOR, CDM, and COSHH mean helps workers understand their rights and obligations under the law. |
| Effective briefings | Toolbox talks and safety documents use these terms daily — understanding them makes briefings more effective. |
