Concrete Delivery Vehicle Discharge Safety

TBT-CON-029

Concrete delivery vehicles are among the heaviest and most top-heavy vehicles entering construction sites. During discharge, the rotating drum, extending chutes, and wet concrete create struck-by, crush, and contact hazards. Poorly managed discharge areas have caused serious injuries and fatalities on UK sites. This talk covers the controls needed to manage concrete delivery safely.

Key Hazards
Pedestrians struck by reversing concrete mixer trucks on site
Concrete burns from wet concrete splashing during chute discharge
Vehicle overturning on soft or sloping ground during discharge
Crush injuries from the rotating drum or moving chute mechanisms
Control Measures
  • Designate a firm, level discharge area capable of supporting the loaded vehicle weight.
  • Use a trained banksman to guide the vehicle into position and control pedestrian movements.
  • Keep all personnel clear of the vehicle during reversing and chute extension.
  • Wear waterproof gloves, safety glasses, and long sleeves when working near the discharge point.
  • Ensure the chute is properly secured and positioned before discharge begins.
  • Do not stand beneath the chute or place any body part near the rotating drum at any time.
  • Wash any wet concrete off skin immediately using clean water.
  • Plan the discharge sequence to minimise vehicle waiting time and reduce congestion on site.
  • Brief the vehicle driver on site speed limits, route, and discharge point location on arrival.
Remember
  • Designate a firm, level discharge area and use a banksman for every concrete delivery
  • Keep all personnel clear of the vehicle during reversing and chute extension
  • Wear waterproof gloves, safety glasses, and long sleeves near the discharge point
  • Never stand beneath the chute or place any body part near the rotating drum
  • Wash any wet concrete off your skin immediately with clean water to prevent burns
