Precast Concrete Element Handling

TBT-CON-031

Precast concrete elements are manufactured off site and delivered for installation by crane. They include floor slabs, beams, columns, wall panels, and stair units. Each element is heavy, often has a high centre of gravity, and requires specific lifting points and rigging arrangements. This talk covers the handling risks from delivery through to installation and the controls that prevent crushing and dropping incidents.

Key Hazards
Dropped elements from incorrect rigging or failure of cast-in lifting points
Workers crushed between the element and the receiving structure during placement
Elements overturning during storage from incorrect stacking or inadequate support
Transport damage weakening lifting anchors or structural integrity before installation
Control Measures
  • Inspect all precast elements on delivery for damage to lifting points and structural cracks.
  • Store elements on firm level ground using the stacking arrangement specified by the manufacturer.
  • Use only the designated cast-in lifting anchors — never use improvised lifting points.
  • Check the lift plan for each element type including weight, rigging, and sling angle requirements.
  • Establish exclusion zones beneath the crane and at the landing position before every lift.
  • Use tag lines to control the element during lifting and prevent uncontrolled rotation or swing.
  • Install temporary propping or bracing immediately after placing each element in position.
  • Brief the installation team on the element sequence, propping requirements, and connection details.
  • Do not release the crane hook until the element is confirmed stable on its temporary supports.
Remember
  • Inspect every element on delivery for damage to lifting points, cracks, and structural integrity
  • Store on firm level ground using the manufacturer's specified stacking arrangement only
  • Use only the designated cast-in lifting anchors and never improvise alternative lifting points
  • Tag lines must control the element during every lift to prevent rotation and swing
  • Install temporary propping immediately after placing each element before releasing the crane
  • Exclusion zones must be maintained beneath the crane and at the landing position throughout
