Epoxy Resin and Structural Adhesive Hazards
Epoxy resins and structural adhesives are widely used in construction for bonding, grouting, and repair work. Both the resin and hardener components contain chemicals that can cause severe skin sensitisation, dermatitis, and respiratory problems. Once a person becomes sensitised to epoxy, even tiny exposures can trigger serious allergic reactions for life. This talk explains the risks and the strict controls required.
- Read the safety data sheet and COSHH assessment for the specific epoxy product before use.
- Wear chemical-resistant nitrile gloves and change them immediately if they become contaminated.
- Use disposable coveralls or barrier sleeves to prevent any skin contact with uncured epoxy.
- Ensure adequate ventilation when mixing and applying epoxy in enclosed or confined areas.
- Use RPE with an organic vapour filter where the COSHH assessment identifies inhalation risk.
- Mix only the quantity of epoxy needed for the immediate task to avoid waste and heat build-up.
- Clean up spills immediately using the manufacturer's recommended cleaning agent — not solvents on skin.
- Store epoxy components in their original labelled containers at the temperature specified by the manufacturer.
- Report any skin irritation, rash, or breathing difficulty after epoxy exposure to your supervisor.
- Read the safety data sheet and COSHH assessment before using any epoxy product on site
- Wear chemical-resistant nitrile gloves and change them immediately if contaminated
- Prevent all skin contact with uncured epoxy using disposable coveralls or barrier sleeves
- Ensure adequate ventilation when mixing and applying epoxy products in enclosed spaces
- Once sensitised to epoxy, even tiny future exposures can trigger severe allergic reactions for life
- Report any skin irritation, rash, or breathing difficulty to your supervisor without delay
