Demolition Exclusion Zone Setup

TBT-DEM-023

Exclusion zones during demolition protect workers and the public from falling debris, dust, and the risk of uncontrolled structural collapse. The size and position of the zone must be calculated based on the height and method of demolition and adjusted as the work progresses. This talk explains how exclusion zones are established, maintained, and enforced during demolition operations on UK construction sites.

Key Hazards
Workers or public struck by falling debris outside an inadequate exclusion zone
Uncontrolled collapse sending material further than the predicted fall radius
Dust and airborne debris affecting neighbouring properties and occupants
Unauthorised persons entering the exclusion zone during active demolition
Control Measures
  • Calculate the exclusion zone radius based on the building height and demolition method used.
  • Install physical barriers such as Heras fencing around the full perimeter of the exclusion zone.
  • Position marshals at all access points to prevent unauthorised entry during demolition activities.
  • Display clear warning signage reading 'Demolition in Progress — Keep Out' at all approach routes.
  • Review and adjust the zone as the demolition progresses and the height of the structure reduces.
  • Brief all site personnel on the exclusion zone boundaries before each demolition phase begins.
  • Ensure neighbouring properties and the public are notified of the demolition schedule in advance.
  • Stop demolition immediately if any breach of the exclusion zone is observed.
  • Record the exclusion zone layout in the demolition method statement and daily site diary.
Remember
  • The exclusion zone radius must be based on building height and the demolition method being used
  • Physical barriers are required around the full perimeter and marshals at every access point
  • Warning signage must be displayed at all approach routes to the exclusion zone area
  • The zone must be reviewed and adjusted as demolition progresses and the structure height reduces
  • Demolition must stop immediately if anyone breaches the exclusion zone during active operations
  • Neighbouring properties and the public must be notified of the demolition schedule in advance
