What?
- A demolition method statement defines the planned sequence, methods, and safety controls for the demolition.
- BS 6187 and CDM 2015 require a written method statement before any demolition work begins.
- The method statement must be prepared or reviewed by a competent demolition engineer.
- It covers the structure type, condition, services, asbestos, and any constraints affecting the work.
- The planned sequence of demolition is critical — removing elements out of order causes uncontrolled collapse.
- Temporary works required during the demolition, including propping and shoring, must be defined.
- Exclusion zones, dust and noise controls, and environmental protection measures are specified.
- The method statement must address emergency procedures specific to the demolition operation.
- All site operatives must be briefed on the method statement before starting any demolition activity.
- The method statement is a live document — it must be updated if conditions change during the works.
Why?
| Prevent collapse | The demolition sequence is the primary control against uncontrolled structural collapse — the method statement defines it. |
| Legal requirement | BS 6187 and CDM 2015 mandate a written method statement before demolition work can commence. |
| Communication | The method statement ensures every worker understands the plan, sequence, hazards, and their specific role. |
