Demolition Safety Awareness Overview

TBT-DEM-007

Demolition is one of the highest-risk activities in construction. Structural collapse, falling debris, dust, noise, and contact with hazardous materials are all present during demolition work. Every demolition task must be carefully planned by a competent person and carried out in a controlled sequence. Understanding the risks and following the method statement is essential for everyone working on or near a demolition site.

Key Hazards
Uncontrolled structural collapse crushing workers in the area
Falling debris striking operatives below the demolition zone
Exposure to asbestos and other hazardous materials in older structures
Dust and noise at harmful levels during breaking out operations
Control Measures
  • Ensure a detailed demolition method statement is produced and briefed before work starts.
  • Carry out a pre-demolition survey covering structure, services, and hazardous materials.
  • Establish exclusion zones around the demolition area with physical barriers and signage.
  • Confirm all services including gas, electricity, and water are isolated before demolition begins.
  • Follow the planned sequence of demolition and never take down structural members out of order.
  • Use dust suppression measures such as water sprays throughout all demolition activities.
  • Wear task-specific PPE including RPE, hearing protection, hard hat, and eye protection.
  • Ensure only trained and competent operatives carry out demolition tasks on site.
  • Inspect the structure daily during demolition to monitor stability and identify new risks.
Emergency / Rescue

If unexpected structural movement occurs, evacuate the exclusion zone immediately. Sound the alarm and call 999. Do not re-enter the area until a structural engineer has assessed the situation.

Remember
  • Demolition must always be carried out to a written method statement by competent persons.
  • Pre-demolition surveys for asbestos and hazardous materials are a legal requirement.
  • Never work outside the planned demolition sequence as this can cause uncontrolled collapse.
  • Exclusion zones must be maintained at all times and access strictly controlled.
  • If the structure behaves unexpectedly, stop work immediately and evacuate the area.
Applicable Legislation: CDM Regulations 2015 · Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 · BS 6187 (Code of Practice for Demolition) · Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012
