What?

  • Electrical building services include power distribution, lighting, fire alarms, data cabling, and security systems.
  • All electrical installation work must be carried out by competent persons in accordance with BS 7671 wiring regulations.
  • First fix involves installing containment, back boxes, and cabling before walls are closed — coordination with other trades is critical.
  • Second fix involves connecting devices, testing circuits, and energising systems — the highest risk phase of electrical installation.
  • Working at height during containment installation and overhead cabling is a significant fall risk for electricians.
  • Cable pulling through containment can cause manual handling injuries from sustained pulling forces and awkward postures.
  • Testing and commissioning involves working on live systems — safe isolation and proving dead procedures must be followed.
  • Fire alarm and emergency lighting installations are life safety systems — defects compromise building occupant safety.
  • Electrical burns and arc flash can occur during connection, testing, and commissioning of distribution boards and panels.
  • Temporary electrical supplies must be managed and inspected to prevent overloading, earth faults, and fire risk.

Why?

Prevent electrocutionSecond fix and commissioning involve working near live circuits — safe isolation procedures prevent fatal electric shock.
Life safety systemsFire alarm and emergency lighting installations protect building occupants — defects can have fatal consequences.
Legal complianceBS 7671 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require competent installation and testing of all electrical systems.
Do Don't
  • Follow BS 7671 wiring regulations for all electrical installation work on site.
  • Use safe isolation procedures and prove dead before working on any circuit.
  • Coordinate first fix activities with mechanical and drylining trades to prevent conflicts.
  • Use correct access equipment for overhead containment and cabling installation.
  • Follow manual handling guidelines and use cable pulling aids for long cable runs.
  • Test all circuits before energisation using calibrated test instruments.
  • Install fire alarm and emergency lighting systems to the approved design without deviation.
  • Wear arc-flash rated PPE when working on distribution boards during commissioning.
  • Manage temporary electrical supplies with regular inspections and correct protection devices.
  • Record all test results and certification as required by BS 7671 and the building regulations.
  • DON'T carry out electrical installation work unless you are a competent, qualified electrician.
  • DON'T work on circuits without safe isolation, locking off, and proving dead first.
  • DON'T install cables or containment without coordinating routes with other trades.
  • DON'T work at height from improvised platforms — use the correct access equipment.
  • DON'T pull cables without assessing the manual handling risk and using pulling aids.
  • DON'T energise circuits until all testing and inspection is completed and documented.
  • DON'T deviate from the approved fire alarm or emergency lighting design.
  • DON'T open live distribution boards without arc-flash rated PPE and proper procedures.
  • DON'T overload temporary supplies or bypass RCD protection on temporary installations.
  • DON'T issue electrical installation certificates for work you have not personally tested.
