Electrical Building Services Safety Overview

TBT-EBS-006

Electrical building services encompass power distribution, lighting, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, data cabling, security systems, and renewable energy installations. This work involves handling live and potentially live circuits, working at height to install containment and luminaires, and coordinating with other trades in shared ceiling voids and risers. Only competent and authorised electricians should carry out electrical installation work, and all completed installations must be tested and certified.

Key Hazards
Electric shock or electrocution from contact with live circuits during installation
Falls from access equipment during overhead cable routing and luminaire installation
Cable damage from other trades working in shared containment routes and risers
Arc flash from short circuits during testing and commissioning of distribution boards
Control Measures
  • Ensure all electrical installation work is carried out by qualified and competent electricians only.
  • Isolate and lock off circuits before working on any electrical system or distribution board.
  • Use insulated tools and wear appropriate PPE when working on or near electrical installations.
  • Test circuits with a proven voltage indicator before touching any conductor assumed to be dead.
  • Use suitable access equipment for overhead cable routing and luminaire installation tasks.
  • Coordinate containment routes with mechanical services to prevent conflicts and cable damage.
  • Label all circuits clearly during installation and maintain accurate as-built records throughout.
  • Carry out all testing and commissioning in accordance with BS 7671 and record results formally.
  • Report any damage to cables, containment, or distribution equipment to the supervising electrician.
Emergency / Rescue

If someone receives an electric shock, isolate the supply before touching them. Call 999 and begin CPR if they are unresponsive. Use a defibrillator if available. Do not touch the casualty while they remain in contact with the live source.

Remember
  • Only qualified and authorised electricians may carry out electrical installation work.
  • Always isolate, lock off, and prove dead before working on any circuit or distribution board.
  • Cables damaged by other trades must be reported and tested before the circuit is re-energised.
  • Arc flash during commissioning can cause severe burns — follow safe testing procedures strictly.
  • All completed electrical installations must be tested and certified to BS 7671 before energisation.
  • Coordinate with other trades to protect cable routes and prevent accidental damage.
